Mercury Retograde

Thurs 9 Dec – Wed 22 Dec
Sun in Sag; Mercury in Cap R; Venus in Scorpio; Mars in Cap;
A potentially awkward Mercury retrograde is upon us now as we attempt to harness the holiday season – either for some leisure time or for the business boost it can bring. However, if you are normally more comfortable in your right-brain or intuitive mode, you will tend to feel more at home during the current three weeks of Mercury retrograde. For these people, this may feel more like the vacation down time that it is, than the struggle to capitalize. If you were initially hoping to do your entire years’ trading in just one month, then get ready to take it slow and be a little more prepared than usual and stay focused as best you can. You will benefit if you took the precautionary measures of ordering all your season’s stock already, as well as your festive shopping, for from now on delays in delivery can be expected across the board. Be open to rethinking decisions, opinions, ideas, plans and interactions from the past that you thought were finished, as it may be time to work with these at a deeper level. Don't be surprised if you hear from some old salt you haven't been in contact with for a while, or if you find yourself revisiting an old situation, perhaps seeing it now with fresh eyes. Certainly business and career decisions and goals may need rethinking. New plans may only really find the ability to take off in the new year. Besides that, governments and long-standing institutions may be affected by the retrograde in earthy Capricorn, as well as our own personal or business foundation, self-image or status in society. You may want to use the introspective retro phase to ask how you can be more powerful, effective or resourceful; how you can assure your reputation and market security. When Mercury slips back into Sagittarius on the 18th, you can re-evaluate your ethical standards and gain renewed optimism for your ideas. The masses are becoming educated and it is no longer possible to fool them with low standard, unhealthy products simply by using glamourous and glitzy advertising gimmicks. Big business – be it pharmaceuticals or foodstuffs – need to question their ethics regarding the value of the buck versus the human being. Are they still so ruthlessly able to rake in the dollars at the expense of the well-being of the masses? Don’t let the festive urge to go large hit you in the waistline when it’s looking like obesity and overweight conditions are overtaking depression as the new upcoming social disease of the modern age, whether in the States or South Africa.

Now with Mars also in Capricorn a hard-working and determined energy will be available, all channeled into the arena of personal attainment, so find a way to work on what will benefit you personally, even if you are obliged to work within a greater corporate structure. Career takes a greater priority and common sense combined with managerial skills are up for grabs – just in time to counter the potentially awkward retrograde of Mercury. Don’t worry if a conservative, skeptical mood slips into the proceedings. For now even the holiday by the sea can be taken seriously and old, tried and tested habits may currently appear to be the good ones.

By Jove

Thurs 25 Nov – Wed 8 Dec
Sun in Sag; Mercury in Sag/Cap 1 Dec; Venus in Libra/Scorpio 30 Nov; Mars in Sag

The melancholy can smile as our Sun moves into one of the more idealistic and optimistic signs for the next month. Ruled by Jupiter, (also known as Jove, from where the word “jovial” arises) this fired up sign of the archer is known to stimulate the spirit of generosity and cheerfulness. Accompanied there by Mars throughout this edition and Mercury until December 1, the Sun should stimulate an aptitude for seeing the bigger picture, painted in broad, sweeping strokes from a palette of warm sunny hues. Take this into consideration if you ever need to present your art to critics with more of an eye for detail. The Impressionists and Fauves have their place too, though the Realists may not see it that way. Not everyone has the depth perspective needed to accommodate such wild horses as may now wish to rear their heads now. Half horse himself, the frisky Sagittarius archetype needs lots of space to roam. He shoots his arrow toward ever-new physical or metaphysical horizons, so whatever your style, enthusiasm and spontaneity should certainly be more available than restraint now, although when Mercury moves into Capricorn in December, the tendency may be for the mind to become more cautious and methodical, with a capacity for a slower, step by step approach. This may be just what is needed to balance all the scattered ideas of before. Every absent-minded professor needs an organized secretary to edit his papers and remind him of the rest of the world’s tendency to go by the clock. By December she should be on the ball, organizing the outdoor trips, going according to the budget and helping him get his foot out of his mouth or his account out of overdraft due to any careless enthusiasm and blind optimism incurred under the archer’s influence.

Sports and outdoor adventures are still favoured now under this extroverted influence, as well as the call of greener pastures and new vistas. Remember though that the grass may look greener on the other side, but you still have your own conditioned mind, perspective, paradigm and assemblage point to deal with when you get here. Inner shifts are often more meaningful, valuable and profound, helping you to realize just how green your grass has been all along.

Let’s also remember that by the end of November our goddess Venus returns to sultry Scorpio and may wish to wear her tinier than ever polka dot number which, when assisted by all the horse power of the other planets may well need a night out on the town or around a candle-lit dinner by the fire. One way or the other, the sensual side you never knew you had may need room for expression too. Regardless of the emotional depths or heights you are urged to, you can still maintain your dignity and pride under this influence. Just be prepared for a more emotionally rich ride on this bucking bronco for the need to roam will be in synergy with the need for emotional control and with that combination who knows how far you may be taken if you just allow yourself.

Horsing around

Thurs 11 Nov – Wed 24 Nov

Sun in Scorpio; Mercury in Sagittarius; Venus in Libra (dir 18th); Mars in Sag

As with last edition, Mars continues to trot his cavalry through horsy Sagittarius, also joined by Mercury in this extroverted fire sign. This makes for a somewhat contrary combination as the predominating Scorpio theme favours a secretive and private mood, while at the same time Mercury, now inspired by his jaunt through the sign of the archer shooting his arrow ever higher toward newly discovered expansive vistas, urges the mind and tongue to find the nearest soap box or inbox to expound his latest realizations on the immanent arrival of the Lizard King and his entourage from you-know-where with their power to save our planet via his new wonder cure for home-sickness. The evangelical urge may suddenly swell. The only dilemma is that in Sagittarius, Mercury may naively or innocently want to say exactly what is on his mind, with little concern for reality, or the potentially sensitive Scorpio feelings of others. The ability to wax to the max may grab you by the tongue but let’s just hope the Scorpio capacity to research the facts has balanced that wonderful imagination. It’s all very well deciding the truth needs a little improving, particularly if you are a storyteller, though not if you are involved in science. It may be necessary to take extra time over the details of your information before publishing. Tertiary academics are favoured now though, particularly broad, expansive subjects beyond the everyday, like philosophy, foreign affairs or even space travel, whether by Merkaba or missile. Add to all this the drive of Mars and you have the recipe for such strongly held convictions that you had better be armed with facts and references if you want to promote your angle or defend your stance from the queue of Witnesses at your door. Even the law courts will be a fine place to battle it out now, as the urge for and sense of justice is sharpened. Outspoken debate over the rights and plights of your cause are inevitable. As to whether your cause is the cause of all causes may never be known, of course. Just don’t expect too much diplomacy or appreciation of the opponent’s opinions now.

On a purely physical level energies could be high with the need to move and explore, so take time to jog off that excess energy on the park or pitch. Fortunately the mood of Sagittarius is generally quite jovial and fun-loving, so despite the capacity for philosophical challenge, the smile may remain as you are tossed to the ground by a judo throw of black belt proportions. Reckless confidence and exuberant optimism may even surge like an annual spring tide (if the Scorpio Sun will allow). You may feel as if you were born under a wandering star called Venus, finally ending her retrograde on the 17th and going direct on the 18th. Just don’t expect to be able to tie yourself or anyone else to the desk just now, and avoid the casinos! The adventurous, freedom-loving spirit is too strong for that, so rather schedule a trip of your choice and pack your dancing shoes, for at this rate where you’re going every step is a dance and every word is a joke.

Sophisticated Scorpio

Thurs 28 Oct – Wed 10 Nov

Although the Sun and Mercury have joined Venus in Scorpio, Mars has just entered fired up Sagittarius. Now the Scorpio influence on Mercury will facilitate a greater degree of introspection into the subtler aspects of the psyche, being a negative polarity water sign. The self-reflective side of the mind will want to go deeper, and may even be able to uncover underlying or hidden truths about itself; or will want to analyze and research, which is great for any of the approaching exam writers ; but how does that help me, you may ask . Well you may also use this time to attune to your intuitive inner voice. Besides that the unconscious has photographic recall of any and all events in your life, so the memory of all the why's and wherefores of what nurtured you to express your nature the way you do, is accessible. Sometimes that knowledge can be a bit frightening of course, but transformation is also a quality of the Scorpio archetype. The activities of the everyday world do not always permit us to spend time on our psychological health. The pressures of earning a living and raising a family take much of our time and focus. If you are one of the few without either of those obligations, then count yourself lucky to have the time for pursuing the breadth and depth of your mind - either by researching longer and harder for exams because you’re still at school, or secondly by going deeper into the science of self- realization because you have renounced or retired from the worldly activities of the rat race. A primary part of mental health is actualizing all ones' potentials, but then actualizing my potentials means knowing who I am on all levels, including the psychic, as referred to by Jung or Blavatsky, as well as the spiritual, as referred to by all the worlds religions, from Baptists to Vedantists. Mercury in Scorpio facilitates the discussion, investigation and analysis of core issues – like life, death and taxes; like those normally unseen hidden fundamental foundations of our reality and I don’t mean your floorboards. Rather, what is it that is secretly buried under the floorboards?

On another note, the traditional Scorpio sting may raise its tail and fork some tongues, so count to five before venting any sharp word that finds itself riding the adrenaline wave that turns to rebuke or rebuttal. Communication and thinking may be more emotionally driven than usual now. On a final note, the potential for ‘termination’ is attributed to Scorpio, so knowing the temporary nature of ones' existence from the start, allows the process of letting go to flow so much easier.

The Eagle and the Snake

Thurs 14 Oct – Wed 27 Oct

Sun in Libra, Scorpio (23rd); Mercury in Libra, Scorpio (21st); Venus in Scorpio retro; Mars in Scorpio

Up until around the 23rd Sun and Mercury are still in Libra balancing out all the water influence coming from the other primary planets. Libra helps to keep it a bit objective, while the emotions are swept like spring tides in the lagoon as it reaches the sea. At least we can still talk to each other while Libra has any sway. Traditionally teambuilding and socializing are favoured, but with Venus, the ruling planet of Libra, still going retrograde, the motivations may be more selfish or personal. The Ziggy Stardust look could try to rear its head as retro Venus brings back some Scorpionic seductive glam rock trend. Think twice about that alluring item, just because it’s on the sale rack. You may regret it when Venus goes forward.

Once Sun and Mercury move into Scorpio with Venus and Mars, its all either eagles wings or poison sting. Those are the two totem animals of Scorpio and they clearly indicate the potentials of this potent water sign. When the eagle shows herself she can facilitate soaring in consciousness to the greatest heights of realization, cognition and consciousness; the eagle soars higher than any other bird; closest to the heavens, flight carrier of Vishnu and emblem of Zeus. If your goal requires superhuman effort, penetrating investigative research or deep psychic insight, then the quadruple transit of Scorpio for a few days from the 23rd is your window of opportunity.

However, if the traditional Scorpion feature of the sign rears his tail, then get your anti-venom kit ready, for the words will spit, the claws will scratch and the sparks will fly. With deadly precision. One can even sting oneself, which is what happens when the deep passions overwhelm the intelligence and we find our freewill voluntarily sacrificed to addiction, STD, or abuse. Scorpio is about power and control, who is in power and who is in control. The power of life over death for example, as in the hands of a surgeon or gunman. The surgeon gains control, first of himself at university, and then masterfully over his patients, while the gunman lacks self-control but desires control over others and gains his power through the gun. Scorpio can produce both results. Mercury in Scorpio will definitely sharpen the tools and the words, and Mars, traditionally the ruler of Scorpio before Pluto was discovered in the 1930’s, in his own sign now will add power to the urges as it urges you to express your power. This could well be the time when you find out what or who you are passionate about, for better or worse. The energy levels may be high, as are the potentials for transformation, whether of something outworn, outgrown or outrageous. So take the opportunity to pack your punch where it can have the highest impact for all concerned.

Venus Retrograde

Thurs 30 September – Wed 13 October

Sun in Libra; Mercury in Virgo, Libra(4th); Venus in Scorpio – retro 8th; Mars in Scorpio; Jupiter in Pisces

So you’ve heard about Mercury retrograde, but you may be interested to know that every 18 months Venus also goes retrograde for about six weeks. The goddess of love, art, beauty and all things feminine will be in her retro phase from October 8th and although researchers sometimes disagree, this has traditionally been observed as a time when relationships from the past could reappear. If you are in a potentially toxic relationship involving deep-seated fear at a core level, even abuse, lack of trust or power, betrayal or control issues, they may surface and the time is ripe to address these issues. Certainly ‘past’ loves may show up on your doorstep (or you on theirs) with an intense desire to rekindle a romance, rehash old issues or is it a passing sexual fling. The main thing is figuring out - without over analyzing - if this ‘past’ is what you want and does it really best suit your life now? With the Sun and Mercury (from the 4th) both in Libra, the urge for harmony, balance and social grace would normally facilitate a healthy approach to social concerns. Of course with Venus in Scorpio, there are no half measures or sitting on the fence in relationship issues, despite the Libran capacity for vacillation currently evident. So it could be an all-or-nothing mood with intimacies running hot or cold and the potential for grief or intensified desire rearing their heads. Certainly our emotional nature will be more introspective, with the retrograde turning the feelings inward, particularly for those with Scorpio Sun, Moon or Ascendant. The other fixed signs (Taurus, Leo and Aquarius) may also feel the effects more strongly. Take this time to reconsider your personal feelings and relationships and try to gain more insight into your style of relating, whether sexually, creatively or financially. Even shared resources or contracts could come up for evaluation. This needn’t be a difficult time, for all relationships need to be reviewed occasionally. It’s just that Venus in Scorpio is sensual, possessive and brooding, even jealous to the point of being vindictive, yet intensely loyal in love, so the intensity it brings may just be up a few notches from the norm. Jealousy, intrigue, power plays and control dramas all mixed with sensuality, sex and intensified desire creates for a potentially explosive recipe to add to your list of cocktails enjoyed by Molotov. Let’s not forget that Mars is also in Scorpio, so not only intimate relationships but any fundamentalist sentiments could rise to fever pitch, especially amongst those who feel justified in seeking revenge. The fixed signs are not known for their flexibility. Besides that, try to avoid the beautician until after the Venus retrograde. Don’t want you coming out accidentally having chosen the wrong stitch, colour or gender change, just because it felt so right at the time.

Jupiter retro and the Scorpio shakti

Thurs 16 Sept – Wed 29 September
Sun in Virgo, 23rd Libra; Mercury in Virgo; Venus in Scorpio; Mars in Scorpio; Jupiter in Pisces (Retro).

What happens when the CEO of Apollo and Son, along with his secretary Mercury arrive at a meeting in a mood of chaste Virgo, while next to them at the round table conference sits Mr and Ms Mars and Venus in sensual and secretive Scorpio? Well if his holiness Jupiter in Pisces were there, he could marry them off while Mr Apollo gave away the bride and Mercury acted as best man.

Particularly since Jupiter is retrograde for the next six weeks or so. He will inspire us to go back and rediscover old religious ways. Ah the good old days, when marriage still meant something. That union of opposites, that tying of the knot, that yoking of the two, that yoga of love. It’s been weeks now that Mars and Venus have been shadowing each other through the courting sign of Libra, never more than a few degree of separation between them. What a conjunction! At now it really gets serious as they take the relationship to the next level - in Scorpio. Hold on to your hats – you don’t want the kundalini blowing a hole through your crown chakra just yet. However, if any sign can reveal the depth, insight and thus illumination attainable when male and female come together like the twining serpents of Mercury’s caduseus, whether as a married couple or as the union of opposites between the eyebrows of the aspirant, then it is Scorpio. The attractive potency, and the desire nature will be simultaneously intensified. Kundalini energy will be stimulated and the magnetism between positive and negative polarities will intensify, whether externally or within the aspiring yogi. This conjunction of Mars and Venus in such a potent sign is highly conducive to fertilization, as the spark of inspiration flies from one to the other and creative expression in all its forms becomes so possible now. Rebirth, rejuvenation and resurrection of life from the fertile plains of the akash are dawning. Use this momentary window of opportunity to harness the merging of Mars and Venus energies in potent and fertile Scorpio to seed new creations, to act on your desire to actualize your highest expression of your self. Under no circumstances should you allow your intensified desire nature and creative urge to become contaminated by misdirected intention or attention during this time. This will merely waste a golden opportunity. The potentials are huge, but in the wrong hands the repercussions are dire if you allow the force or shakti to become misplaced. With Jupiter retrograde in Pisces we are able to go back and retrieve the secrets of the ancient mystery traditions and gain entire new levels of realization in the tantric arts, as we discover the attractive principle, and for a few even attain a glimpse of the all-attractive one, the reservoir of all pleasure, the one without a second.

Crippling strike

Thurs 9 September – Wed 22 September
If last edition’s Mercury retrograde phase left you feeling rather symphoric, i.e. clumsy and accident-prone, then you will be glad to know that the retro comes to and end by September 11. But what about the numerous learners at schools whose educations have been disrupted by the three weeks of strikes, particularly the aspiring matric writers, who may end up failing or not qualifying for tertiary education because of this delay and disruption in the education system? Who knows how many innocent youths have been affected by this wage strike by the public servants, just another symptom of the Mercury retrograde in the sign of Virgo. Not only schools but also hospitals and the health care industry have been affected, potentially affecting the ill and HIV infected who could not receive treatment. Virgo themes include health and education. At its best Virgo symbolizes health care, hygiene and orderliness, along with a skill for public service. With the Sun currently in Virgo, as well as Mercury retrograde in Virgo, these themes are in the spotlight, but in a disrupted manner. Let’s hope September 11 is not too late to address the delays caused in these departments. A teacher friend told me how kids were being so intimidated in their townships by strikers that they had to dress in plain clothes and pretend to be going elsewhere when coming to school. Some teachers were even meeting their learners in libraries as the schools themselves were barricaded by strikers. Virgo epitomizes the good doctor, nurse, teacher and librarian, amongst others, but the retrograde has turned all this on its head. In the ancient Vedic culture of India a teacher or brahmana was of such high moral character that he or she would not even receive a wage, but would be willing to provide the service to society, while society so respected them, that all their needs were met. And gone are the days when the doctor or nurse took the Hippocratic oath, vowing to save any life. Even our president, Jacob Zuma, God bless him, is quoted as saying, "The abandonment of patients, including babies in incubators, as well as schoolchildren, is difficult to comprehend and accept, no matter how sympathetic one is to the needs of workers." Mercury goes retrograde about three times every year, but not always in the sign of Virgo. This current phase has been synchronous with the strike season and the disruption has been a difficult one for the entire country, particularly the poor.

Mercury's retro look

Thurs 26 Aug – Wed 8 Sept

About every four months Mercury, the winged messenger, first rock from Apollo the Sun, goes retrograde. August 20 until September 11 marks the current retrograde phase. A planet is described as retrograde when it appears to be moving backwards through the zodiac. According to modern science, this traditional concept arises in the illusory planetary motion created by the orbital rotation of the earth with relation to other planets in our solar system. Planets are never actually retrograde or stationary, they just seem that way due to this cosmic shadow-play.

A retrograde period is best seen as a cycle, beginning when a planet becomes stationary (Aug 20th this time), and ending when it returns to the point where it first paused (Sept 27th - although the actual visible backward movement ends on Sept 11th). However, during the cycle, a planet's energy is most powerful (and more likely to generate critical events) when the planet makes a station, appearing motionless in the sky. These stationary periods occur at the beginning of the cycle (Aug 20th), when the planet first halts as it prepares to move backwards, and midway through the cycle when the retrograde planet slows to a stop before moving forward again (Sept 12th). The direct station (when the planet halts before moving forward again on Sept 12th) is the most powerful and can be used for maximum benefit.

In general, Mercury rules thinking and perception, processing and disseminating information and all means of communication, commerce, education and transportation. By extension, Mercury rules people who work in these areas, especially those who work with their minds or their wits: writers and orators, commentators and critics, gossips, teachers, travelers, even tricksters and thieves. Thus astrologically Mercury retrograde gives rise to personal misunderstandings; flawed, disrupted, or delayed communications, negotiations and trade; glitches and breakdowns with phones, computers, cars, buses, and trains. And all of these problems usually arise because some crucial piece of information, or component, has gone astray or awry. It is not wise to make important decisions while Mercury is retrograde, since it is likely that such decisions will be clouded by misinformation, poor communication and careless thinking. Mercury is all about mental clarity and the power of the mind, so when Mercury is retrograde these intellectual characteristics tend to be less acute than usual. Check the small print!

Song of Awakening

The age of enlightenment slowly reached me,
It seemed the appropriate moment to see
The aspect, dispositor, midpoint 'n time;
The very distinctiveness felt so sublime.

Familiar as solstice to sun-seeking souls,
I glimpsed the profoundest of life's real goals,
The ultimate time to awake sleeping souls
Is now that you're here not as halves but as wholes.

"Just see..." introspective unending display
Of momentary lapses of reason as Hey-
Dark lover you call me to dance as you play
And time by its absence conspicuous lay.
Now what is it that causes two of the worst oil spills in world history, one off America and one off China, to occur within days of each other? Well the other day, a few editions back, I mentioned a total solar eclipse which fell on 11 July (on the day of the World Cup Final and Spain’s victory) and how it involved a tight T- square aspect between several planets, all focused on Pluto in Capricorn. Well the square aspect to Pluto has lasted for several months now, even though the solar eclipse only lasted a few minutes. In Greek mythology and astrological lore Pluto is Lord of the Underworld, affiliated with anything which is buried or hidden - the unconscious, hidden treasures and the earth’s hidden wealth. The archetypal shadow even, outwardly dark and negative, but potentially the source of our support and ultimate individuation when harnessed, according to Jung. Pluto literally means “the wealthy one”. Astrologically Pluto is also associated with mines and mining, (as well as plumbing curiously) and I couldn’t help but see the two oil drilling disasters as a synchronous ripple in the tide of the planet, playing itself out while the other planets echoed in the symphony of the solar system. The planets have been grouping up against each other at three points in the constellation belt around Earth for the past few months; some in square aspect (90 degrees) and others in opposition (180 degrees) to each other. And these are all the slowest moving planets; that’s why this multiple aspect is lasting so long, since April when the oil spill first occurred. A way of reading the oracle of the planets at the moment, simply by looking at a horoscope for the past few months, would be to see that all that pressure from Saturn and Uranus on Pluto has manifested as blowing the lid on our subterranean stores and sending all their black gold spewing uncontained.
Besides that, Pluto symbolizes hidden forces, of the depths where they gather and of their ruthless, irresistible or uncontrollable eruptions. Pluto was also in Capricorn in 536 AD, when the Mediterranean froze under a cloud of dust, due to a volcanic eruption in the Southern Hemisphere that brought a nuclear winter to the North. That makes the volcanic eruption in Iceland the other day look quite mild, but it does seem to suggest a pattern.
Then last week (early Aug) the faster planets of the solar system joined the T- square configuration for a few days. Venus, the goddess of love and good fortune, smiled on the situation and BP finally sealed their leak just as Venus joined Saturn. It’s not over yet though. I wonder what the horoscope of BP’s CEO who had to resign looks like?
If Pluto was prominent in his chart, or any of the first few degrees of the Cardinal signs were important (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn). That is where it’s all taking place in the zodiac now.

Purity is the force

Thurs 2 Sept – Wed 15 September
Sun Virgo; Mercury Virgo (dir 12th); Venus Libra /Scorpio 9th; Mars Libra

With Mercury ending his retrograde movement, a one day window of opportunity arises on Sept 12, the day Mercury is stationery before going forward again. This day is considered very valuable by astrologers for achieving maximum effect in any undertaking. With both the Sun and Mercury still in earthy Virgo, maximum results can be achieved in the fields of health, hygiene, work, employees, duty and daily routine activities on the job. Throughout the entire month of Virgo, but particularly on this day, the process of ‘purification’ is available to us, so if ever you wanted to detox, clean out any clutter, old or outlived patterns and habits, or unwanted attitudes in your life and mind, then this is a good phase for that kind of spring cleaning. Being an earth sign, there is a practical, down to earth mood, where a conscientious, hardworking and organized attitude may be available, with attention to detail if required. Just be careful not to become too fussy, critical, overly analytical or exacting during this period. The urge for perfection may just stifle the spontaneity - or the romance - if we don’t keep an eye on the bigger picture.
Venus is still at her most romantic and aesthetically astute (until the 9th when she slides into sultry Scorpio). Use this opportunity to listen to and understand the feelings of others. These are the last few days to really capitalize on the valuable influence of Venus in Libra to strengthen your relationships or make peace with those who may have become estranged. I’m sure many will agree that interpersonal relationships are the most taxing and challenging, but also the most important department of our lives. With both Venus and Mars in Libra, the mood is to be a lover, not a fighter, and real pleasure will come from bringing pleasure to others. Creating harmony and restoring balance should come easily for a change. The fact that both John Lennon and Elvis Presley had Mars in Libra in their birth charts should indicate the potential currently available to you guys out there for sweet words and smooth, seductive winning ways over your potential beloved. Equality and compromise are certainly secrets to success at present.
One question worth meditating on now is “What is it that constitutes real beauty?” Naturally a pretty face and proportioned body are the traditional gifts of Venus, able to attract all who view them, but such fleeting blessings fade with time and if we over-identify with them, we may well be setting ourselves up for disappointment as we lament their gradual disappearance. With Virgo also prominent now, it is worth realizing that “purity” is an equally powerful attractive force, and one that needn’t fade but can actually grow with time. Not only the purity of the virgin or the infant, or of foodstuffs, water and air, but particularly the saintly soul who can inspire others to emulate that behaviour and rise to greater heights of physical, mental and ultimately spiritual expression… purity of thought, action and motive is a force more attractive and enduring that any shallow, temporary ego-based beauty that advertisers shamelessly flaunt, only confusing the youth and masses as to the real values and priorities in life. “Pure” can be associated with clean, and as it is said, cleanliness is next to godliness.

Mars'/Venus tame the Mercury retro

Thurs 19 Aug – Wed 1 September
To have both Venus our Love goddess and Macho Mars our warrior god both in Libra at the same time is certainly quite a boon. If men are from Mars and women are from Venus, then this is definitely the time when the two genders should be able to find rapport. Venus is actually at home here in her own sign, ready to entertain her special guest Mars, who can throw off his warrior armour and practice his conversation skills, and diplomatic arts now. During the duration of this edition Mars and Venus are in fact conjunct, being within a few degrees of each other in the zodiac. Talk about getting up close and personal. The need to express the desire nature will increase, as well as the urge for making social contacts in general, so get out your phrase book and practice those one-liners. It only takes 30 seconds to create a first impression on someone, so make sure it’s a favourable one. For those less socially inclined, get out your art tools, the tools of your art, and channel the passions and creative urges into something beautiful.
The Sun is also in his own sign in fiery Leo until the 23rd, the sign associated with the heart, with romance, fun and kids – any creativity actually, children being the most literal expression of the creative act. Thereafter the Sun’s shift into Virgo may find the mood shifting toward work, duty, health and hygiene; so relationships with co-workers, staff, as well as healthcare practitioners are a natural focus.

Just remember that Mercury, although also in his own sign of Virgo, is retrograde from Aug 20th through until Sept 11th. The 20th itself, called the ‘station’, when Mercury appears to stand still before retrograding, is a particularly critical day, so try to avoid planning any significant events for that day if at all possible. Thereafter it may, for example, be a good time to repair your old car, home appliance or computer, but not ideal for any new purchase. The idea with the retrograde is that it facilitates going back and redoing or repairing something that is broken, but that anything new attempted now may need redoing later. Firm decisions that have been previously made when Mercury was traveling normally through the zodiac may be implemented or finalized while Mercury is retrograde so not to worry about that. It may facilitate introspection, particularly amongst those who have Virgo prominent in their charts. Lingering or untreated health issues can be tackled too during the Virgo retro period when the purpose is to review and revise our lives, health, diet and routines, as well as our work, staff, productivity and efficiency. The urge to sift through, refine and upgrade our systems should be harnessed, while simply relaxing if delays or obstacles present themselves in the daily tidal flow of events (not uncommon in this country). No use trying to comb your hair during a wind storm.

Pluto's t-square explodes

Now what is it that causes two of the worst oil spills in world history, one off America and one off China, to occur within days of each other?

Venus and Mars Tango

Thurs 5 Aug – Wed 18 Aug
Sun in Leo; Mercury in Virgo; Venus in Virgo, Libra 7th ; Mars in Libra; Saturn in Libra

Although Mercury is still well placed in Virgo for rational thinking, discernment and a meticulous approach to life and learning, it is from August 7th, when Venus gracefully enters her own sign of Libra, joining Mars and Saturn there, that we can really capitalize on the opportunity to cultivate that which is nearest and dearest to us all – relationships. Who said money? Although rap artists are adept nowadays at placing the blinging dollar sign up there on the pedestal with the lover, the majority of songs are written about love and relationship. And so it has been throughout history. In the early days several centuries ago it was relationship with the divine of course, but that eventually gave way to mundane relationship here and now with the human beloved as opposed to the spiritual beloved so idolized by Catholic, Sufi and Hindu alike. Basically Venus in her own sign of Libra is facilitating, possibly more than any other placement, the qualities of social harmony, being in love and true marriage. And Mars in Libra at present will make it easier than usual to act with the need for co-operation, diplomacy, discussion and consideration of the other. And it is when we consider the other, place their interests first, or at least on par with our own, that relationship and partnership can really flourish. This is the time when the males of the species, who may have had a bad rap over all the aggressive behaviour of the past, can really shine by showing their social skills and gracefulness when with the fairer sex. It’s just that the genders are hardwired to be different, with men being by nature more aggressive, independent and risk-taking, while women are naturally more empathetic and security-seeking, based on Harvard sociobiology studies.

Overall, at this time the desire for harmony amongst everyone, as well as the distaste for anything unpleasant or ugly, will facilitate a coming together of old connections and the establishing of new ones, so get ready for those dinner parties, business lunches or even a breakfast in bed with your significant other. Of course all relationships work harmoniously when we are in harmony with our inner other halves, when both hemispheres of the brain are sharing ideas, or when we are at peace with our God. With Saturn also in Libra, relationships will be taken more seriously, partnerships will be serious teachers and lessons in maturity and responsibility will come from the field or inter-relationships. There will be demands for balance, justice and fairness. Unfortunately things can sometimes get ugly in the pursuit of beauty, so allow your pursuit of the letter of the law to match the spirit of the matter at hand. Avoid any conflicts by considering the other party in the first place. Win – win or no deal is an ideal to strive for, and tact, diplomacy and good timing are great social skills for keeping the scales balanced with this Libran emphasis. Ultimately the other party is a mirror of yourself and until we realize that there is no division, no us and them, only one family of human beings, actually of all life, we will continue to act as if divided amongst ourselves, when it is ultimately union for which we all strive.

Relationship arts of Venus

Thurs 8 July – Wed 21 July
Sun in Cancer; Mercury in Leo from 9th: Venus in Virgo from 10th; Mars in Virgo
Total solar eclipse 11 July (new moon 19*30 Cancer) visible over Pacific Ocean

If you thought the partial lunar eclipse of last edition was something to write home about then get ready for the total solar eclipse on the new moon of 11 July. It will be visible over the Pacific Ocean if you want to catch a glimpse. When there is a disruption of the pattern, via an eclipse, the natural flow of the dark/light cycle is temporarily stopped in its tracks. There is darkness where there should be light. It is as if the Laws of our Universe are temporarily inverted, and the world is stood on its head. Granted, this happens somewhere twice a year, to a greater or lesser extent, but compared to the massive numbers of regular daily and lunar cycles, eclipses are fairly rare and therefore significant. So the eclipse becomes much more significant when thought of as a disruption of time. And, similar to sleep deprivation, things can get a little unsettled rather quickly.

The Sun continues to inspire thoughts of home and hearth while in Cancer, and a somewhat moody undertone may persist particularly if the weather is grey. Emotions are stronger now and so is the need to feel protective over them as well as any dependants you may have. Of course with Mercury parading through Leo from the 9th the mind and willpower are strengthened but be careful of a potential stubbornness or dogmatic, opinionated mindset which could spoil your family gatherings. Is it really so important that you be seen as the authority on how to make the topping for the cheesecake? On the other hand, if you need to dramatically or forcefully present your case to the world of the immanent arrival of Planet Nibiru and her extraterrestrial inhabitants, then now is the time to sharpen that quill and pump up that charisma. After all, they too may need an ambassador. They may even have a soccer team. Just don’t be surprised by the pride and boastfulness potentially available if they win a match though. If you usually tend to generalize or forget details, then this current influence of Mercury won’t help either. Unless you are able to harness the influence of Mars and Venus, both in Virgo now. This is also not an ideal time for romance, as the sign of the Virgin inclines Venus to over-analyze emotions and become critical of the near and dear. The emotions may be kept in check as one plays it safe until the object of your affection is exactly what you want. May as well wait for Nibiru at that rate. Fortunately commitment and devotion are available now and the practical needs of the partner will be met. This is a good time to clean up your act by sorting out your files, improving your personal hygiene, neatening your appearance and improving your manners and politeness. Even that alone may turn Venus’ glance in your direction. Mars in Virgo continues to focus more on the job than the relationship, pleasing the boss but not necessarily the partner, unless of course it also means bringing home the bread – probably a gluten-free rye considering Virgo’s penchant for health.

Thurs 22 July – Wed 4 Aug
Sun Leo 23rd ; Mercury Leo, Virgo 27th ; Venus Virgo; Mars Virgo

When Mercury comes home to his own sign of Virgo on the 27th, precise analytical reasoning becomes easy. And with our goddess of Love and her chaperone, Major General Mars, already present in Virgo, you may find yourself living completely in your head. The cool, clinical approach may bring out your critical side, which is great if you are writing your thesis at campus, but it may leave you appearing somewhat remote and unfeeling. Discernment is a valuable quality to cultivate during this edition. In fact it is available by the bucketful. Thus now is the time to go on a health programme of some sort, or refine your nutritional intake. Just be careful not to worry so much about how sinful your little snack is that you end up unable to eat at all, defeating the very purpose of your regimen – health and happiness; or becoming so self-critical that you forget that as a human being its alright to find yourself being human. “Whose idea was this human form of life anyway? Surely they could have come up with a better, more efficient model” you think to yourself. “I mean look at all these hairs coming out of my nose, and various other orifices, even growing on my toes, for heaven’s sake” your mind mutters. “I can’t go out in public like this.” Fortunately the rest of the public has the same model, give or take a few hairs, so not to worry yourself out of yourself just now. Rather use this time to become well-informed and learned in the various hair removal creams, lotions and techniques, while remembering that the Sun is also at home in his own palace in Leo now, and we all know how lions take great pride in their mane of hairs. Hopefully the Leo warmth, pride and self-dignity will help you to counteract any excessive self-criticism or overly modest tendencies for now. And on the other hand, the potential Leo vanity can be tempered too. This combination could, for example, enable you to very intricately and meticulously create your fine work of art that you have been waiting to show the world. By paying attention to the details and being well-informed, you can feel confident in having the desired effect on others and gaining some respect. The month of Leo can – on a normal day - facilitate romance and creative expression. It’s just that the triple planetary placements in Virgo may be fussy, difficult to please and sometimes downright neurotic, not to mention undemonstrative. Another synthesis of the scenario might facilitate taking a stroll up to the moral high ground, where one can maintain a good view of one’s reputation, sexual hygiene and purity of heart, while at the same time cultivating a modest courtship over a glass of prune juice and parsley. There will be other times in the future when one can get down and dirty, if required. Venus is astrologically considered to be “in its fall” in Virgo because love and beauty simply do not take well to analysis. Fortunately pure and natural love, as well as art or beauty, also has a place in time and this could well be it. And from July 29th Mars is in Libra, joining Saturn there (from the 21st already) to facilitate the most important and absorbing subject to the human race – relationships!

Lunar Eclipse and the Cardinal Grand Square

Thurs 24 June – Wed 7 July 2010
Solar and lunar eclipses are fairly standard occurrences a couple of times every year. However, the partial lunar eclipse on the full Moon of 26 June is proving to be quite a lineup as five other planets also jostle for a rare opportunity to be involved in a configuration known as a cardinal grand cross. Mercury joins the Sun in Cancer on the one hand, while in opposition we have the Moon conjunct Pluto in Capricorn. Then at right angles to them, we have Saturn on the one hand opposing Jupiter and Uranus on the other. So the two arms of the cross lie at right angles to each other, with all the planets mentioned locked in a challenging and tension-filled configuration. Except for the Moon, which moves much faster then the rest through the zodiac, these planets will remain locked in this configuration for a few days. Naturally the peak is on the full Moon of the 26th around lunch time local time. Being a partial eclipse, the only countries to get a good view thereof will be North and South America, China, India and South-east Asia. Despite the traditionally inauspicious astrological interpretation of eclipses, you won’t have to hide under your bed if you don’t want to, or fast or lock up shop for that matter (although they may well be doing that in India). However, challenges are to be expected, particularly between Sun and Mercury in Cancer inclining the tendency toward home, family and other nurturing activities in private, while juxtaposing them in the opposite sign of Capricorn, the Moon and Pluto are instinctively, habitually and compulsively pulling us toward career, the job and other public issues, perhaps involving reputation or status. Then on the second arm of the grand cross we have Saturn compelling us toward duty, obligation and the restrictions accompanying that, while directly in opposition Jupiter and Uranus call us to break free, express our independence and broaden our horizons. Trying to juggle all those impulses simultaneously is like trying to blow your own vuvuzela without disturbing your neighbour, or trying to sneak off work to take your son to the world cup soccer match without your boss finding out. Since this configuration of planets occurs in the early stages of the cardinal signs (around the 4th degree), the people who may feel this influence most strongly are those born from about the 21st to the 26th of Dec (Capricorn), March (Aries), June (Cancer) or September (Libra).

Besides that, with Sun and Mercury in watery Cancer this edition, following the intuition will be easier, though objective thinking may take second place to deep-seated instinctive emotional responses to any situation. A sudden inexplicable urge for Mother’s homemade treat from your early childhood may drive you into the kitchen, and in fact this would be the best time to reconnect with estranged parents, or anyone from your past who you once considered family.

Astrology since the Golden Dawn of Time

From ancient times the sky has been divided up in groups of stars that were given names, relating to myths and legends. The most important of these are the 12 constellations situated in the zodiac. Possibly originating with the Chaldeans and Sumerians, the zodiac was adopted by the Greeks, Romans and Indians thousands of years ago and although in no way scientifically exact, the myths surrounding the archetypal images of the zodiac have become instilled in the collective unconscious of humanity ever since. Jung laid bare the connection between psychology, spirituality and mythical symbolism. Through comprehension of the archetypical world we can begin to understand the way the core impulses of the psyche manifest themselves through humanity. Personalities found in archetypes are shaped by the collective human transcendent experience. They have existed from the earliest record of human history. In his Collected Works, Jung says: “The collective unconscious appears to consist of mythological images… In fact, the whole of mythology could be taken as a sort of projection of the collective unconscious. We can see this clearly if we look at the heavenly constellations, whose originally chaotic forms were organized through the projection of images… These influences are unconscious introspective perceptions of the activity of the collective unconscious.” So does that mean astrology is something like dream interpretation? Maybe, and if it gives your life meaning then it has psychological value, just like religion for that matter.

With the story of the zodiac and the significance of the names of the various personalities found in the different constellations, we should be able to retrace the history of mankind. Nearly all the mythology of Greece and Rome may be traced in star groups. Nearly every religion in the world shows traces of astrological influences and nearly all the races of the earth grouped the stars into constellations and often saw figures that were often amazingly similar to others of distant cultures.
The problem with modern astrology, popularized by Linda Goodman in the seventies, is that most people are aware of only one aspect of the horoscope, namely the zodiac position of the Sun at their birth, and thus see astrology as a broad generalization too shallow to encompass the entire range of individual personality types that exist. A deeper investigation will reveal that the position of the Moon and all the planets also needs to be considered when interpreting the personality of an individual as based on their horoscope.

Mercury blows the ball into the net

Thurs 10 June – Wed 23 June
The Sun in the air sign of Gemini greatly facilitates communication, wind instruments and learning new subjects or new words. Here’s a new word for the English language: vuvuzela. It’s a noun and describes a monotonous trumpet-like object whose sound can transport you to the temples of Tibet or the path of an approaching ocean liner, depending on whether your team has won or not; popularized by South Africans at the 2010 World Cup soccer. Gemini rules the lungs but not the dribble, so keep the dribble on the ball and off your fellow spectators’ shoulders if you have to blow your vuvuzela ad nauseum during any of the matches. It may tend to run out the front of your vuvuzela if you’re not careful, and though the Sun in Gemini greatly favours meeting the neighbours, there must be better ways than blowing your own trumpet into his or her ear while simultaneously salivating like a St. Bernard. The current world footballer of the year – Lionel Messi from Argentina – is a Gemini, so perhaps he will be blessed by the Winged Messenger, also coincidentally in the sign of Gemini this edition. Just in time to facilitate dexterous ball-juggling by the meistros of the beautiful game.
Besides that we will all benefit from a boost of speed in all thought and communication while the Sun and Mercury whiz through Gemini, the latter taking exactly two weeks to transit the entire sign. Speech, writing, brainstorming, and all forms of media will feel the boost in bandwidth, so check your breaks incase the pace leaves you slipping up or scatterbrained. The mind may become restless, distracted and difficult to focus, but you can make plenty of contacts and network many new ideas with those on the same page as you.
With Venus leaving Cancer by the 14th feelings won’t be as sensitive but nor will they be as kind hearted or sympathetic either as relationships move from a nurturing, mothering mood to one of social pride in our partner and a flashier need for shows of affection. Although Mars is now in dutiful Virgo and will want to put all his energy into his work and possibly his workout too, so that he looks and feels fit and healthy, Leonine Venus will still want to have fun and feel good by having a little something romantic on the side. Let’s hope you have time for all this in your busy schedule, what with all those soccer matches demanding your attention too. You won’t be able to blame Venus for feeling a bit jealous as she has to compete with the footballers for your attention. Make sure you leave enough time after all the daily demands to lavish your attention on a potential loved one. Venus is at one of her most romantic and ardent times now, so it would be a pity to lose the opportunity just because Mars is feeling more dedicated to his work or feeling rather critical, exacting or even severe as his perfectionist tendencies rear their puritanical heads. If you find any nervous habits, odd ailments or irritability manifesting, it means you are probably over-analyzing life and getting too caught up in your work and getting it done correctly now, and forgetting to take time to wine and dine your better half. Just because the winter solstice of June 21 is a time of extremes, it doesn’t mean you can’t still use the Gemini influence to multi-task or have your fingers in more than just one pie.

Cosmic Gravity plays soccer with Planet Earth

Am I ready for the World Cup in my country? If you’re in Plett it doesn’t matter because the World Cup probably won’t even filter down to Robberg beach. It will probably wash up against the shores of Knysna Heads with flair. That’s if Iceland’s main export doesn’t start spewing into the air and blocking half the flights to the World Cup – the European half. And that includes players. I wonder what the stats are of it happening? Curiously there is talk of a major planetary configuration taking place throughout the duration of the football and beyond, with peak dates at the full moon on the 26th of June and again afterwards at the end of July. The first sees the partial Lunar eclipse lining up the Sun, Moon and Mercury with a tense and tight t-square between Pluto on the one hand and Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus on the other. That means seven of the ten main bodies inhabiting our solar system are involved in a multiple grand cross. And it turns out that two researchers were able to reasonably accurately predict the time and geographic location of the Sumatra Earthquake, using astronomical data about the larger planets in our solar system. This lead to the conclusion that distance and angular relation of the solar system is in fact part of what triggers earthquakes, once again showing how interlinked we are with cosmos. Wow; if it can cause an earthquake, what are the chances it can disrupt a volcano? Luckily the players will be here by then. In which case the Garden Route can treat the visitors to a hospitable stay and maybe even get a few autographs. May fetch something on ebay. Either way the World Cup can be a valuable experience for all involved. If you don’t want to be involved, there’s always Plett.
And according to some physicists at a university in Paris there is a connection between the Earth’s changing shape and the gravitational effects of other bodies in the solar system, particularly Jupiter and Saturn, who both dwarf us. Which makes it possible that, with enough of a pull to shift the Earth’s plates, volcanic activity could well be stimulated. The planets involved are all at 90 degree or 180 degree angles to each other - give or take three degrees - creating what is considered a challenging or tension-filled relationship between the planets involved. At least we are clear of the volcanic fallout here in the southern hemisphere, but the t-square affects all of us, particularly those born around the first few days of any of the cardinal signs, namely Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn. As for the second peak of this extended t-square aspect, that occurs at the end of July and I’ll mention more about it then.

The Great Leap Forward for Jupiter and Uranus

Thurs 27 May – Wed 9 June
This is the last fortnight of Mars’ extended stay in Leo so get it while it’s hot. By June 6th he will be in cool and dutiful Virgo. While still on this side of the cusp though, Mars favours the sensational and dramatic approach, and therefore also requires our respect for those who wish to aggrandize themselves. Those of you who tend toward depression have immunity until the Mars shift into Virgo, so enjoy it and entrench it as a new paradigm to keep you chirpy during any future potentially moody times.
Also taking place on June 6th at a planet near you is Jovial Jupiter’s brief sneak preview into Aries for three months, after which he returns to his main attraction as a star in Pisces for the rest of the year. Jupiter’s position in the zodiac reveals to us where we can grow, expand or get lucky and in the sensitive water sign of Pisces, the intuition and imagination are fields of opportunity for us, along with the charitable concern for the underdog. Sounds paradoxical, I know, but the motivation to give brings more benefit this year than the desire to get. Ideally we can rise above pettiness and see the bigger picture - that we are all actors in this big screen blockbuster called Life on Earth and by thinking globally and acting locally we can play our part throughout our seven ages. Then when it’s time to drop the mask we can return to being our selves knowing the show will go on. At the rate we are going now, we are likely to bring the house down sooner than expected. But let’s not go there. We don’t all have to clean up the spilt oil, though we can all become conscious of how much oil our carbon footprint demands and how sustainable it actually is. As the Bard says, “This wide and universal theatre presents more woeful pageants than the scene we play in.”
As for Jupiter’s taste of Aries fast approaching, we can expect an expansion of all things related to that sign. So there will be an abundant supply of hats. After all, Aries rules the head. Even hair products could get a boost. Jokes aside though, during the past 60 years Jupiter has transited Aries five times. Four out of the past five times the Stock Market has gone up. Expansive enthusiasm may arise though this is only a three month phase remember. During this time individual creativity is favoured as Aries rewards the inventor, so we could see a rise in new sources of energy, like home-made electricity. This is especially true when Jupiter conjuncts Uranus - also on the 6th of June coincidentally – for a few days. With all eyes on Uranus, also just testing the Aries waters for three months before retreating to Pisces until next year, sudden new ideas can emerge like a bolt from the blue and radical change will not be surprising either. Another thing that will push things forward again is the long awaited end of Saturn’s retrograde around the start of June. At last the wheels of industry can roll out and deliver on their promises, while new projects can be started with confidence. Not a moment too soon either; I can hear those World Cup soccer fans beating a path here already.

Astrology as symbol and archetype

Even though astrology is studied by those who enjoy it, very few modern astrology writers encourage readers to interpret astrology in any other way than allegorically with appreciation for the ancient system, as an admirer might a dead language and the idiosyncrasies of the people who used it. It helps those on a search to find meaning in a sometimes apparently random world; to categorize their world with something that sounds systematic; to answer questions and shed light on themselves and their place in the system.

The other day I took Marcus Aurelius for his morning walk and wondered, as he lifted his leg beside a church wall, if God would forgive him for his indiscretion. In India the priests at some temples wouldn’t even offer the fruit, milk or grains to their gods if a dog had so much as looked at any of it. Then I reminded myself not to be so superstitious and left Marcus to his duties. In a sense astrology is like Christianity; you accept on faith a mythical doctrine upon which to base your judgment of reality. Christianity has the Father and the Son and sometimes the Mother, whereas astrology has some mythic Greco-Roman gods –Jupiter, Mercury and Diana (Moon) and even a few more. Of course in astrology we interpret it all symbolically and as a pastime, while in Christianity lives depend on it. Astrology is a mantle to be worn lightly as an alternative calendrical system of timing events of varying cycles based on earlier observers’ experiences. Reality still rests with its feet on the ground and its eye on the stock market indicators. Other than that astrology is an interesting tool to engage the mind and ego in self-analysis by attributing personal attributes to the archetypal states discussed. The archetypes and deities are projections by us of our own inner potentials and personality types. Before today’s neurology labs were invented scientists used to use other labels to measure and record their observations on human behaviour, and these scientists concurred worldwide in a web of their own agreement from Europe to the Middle East to India, much of the old world basically. Nowadays, even here on the Garden Route the astrologer, psychiatrist or counselor does the job of an old time priest in dealing with issues of the psyche, Latin for soul. Anyone inspired enough can study the systems of the various researchers and graduate as a qualified advisor in that field. In other words they have some legitimacy even though they are no more than theories. The theory that the constellations around the earth, known as the zodiac belt, can be imbued with meaning based on cyclic observations is one that forms the foundation upon which astrologers base their observations.

Out of the woods and into the fast lane

Thurs 13 May – Wed 26 May
The Sun strides off to catch up with Venus by also entering the sign of Gemini on the 21st, only to find she has just moved to her new home in Cancer, all the while leaving Mercury to plod through Taurus as he takes his time to regain his old pace. Thus communication and thought will be clearer but still need time to find surety. Patience and practicality are still favoured so allow for time to think it through, and take advantage of the mental stamina available to work long and hard on the mental level. Shrewd money management may incline toward caution, so long as you don’t stubbornly demand to stay with the sinking ship. In these times of global financial meltdown, the entire capitalist system could be seen as a sinking ship, but lets not go there. And if we do then let’s hope you have your life jacket of alternative value systems and priorities of human life strapped firmly to your self.

While the Sun still accompanies Mercury in Taurus, material issues may predominate within the psyche and you can get some hard work done if you want, though may not want to try anything new or take any chances. As long as it’s familiar, and especially if it’s comfortable, it will appeal. Of course if it’s not urgent you may just find yourself a bit lazy to even make the effort. The new South Africa falls under the sign of Taurus, and although they have the strength of a bull on the rugby field, the pace of service delivery leaves a lot to be desired, literally. With Venus also skipping daintily through Gemini like a curious child, romance may take second place to busy social networking, and you may find yourself getting engaged on Facebook. Just make sure you give your partner enough scope to twitter away his or her time telling the world all about it.

Although the Sun enters Gemini on the 21st facilitating the emergence of your multi-tasking skills and need for variety, Venus simultaneously creeps into Cancer, making feelings much more sensitive and easily hurt now. Tenderness is more important now in your dealings, as well as a potentially needy or nurturing theme (one being the polar opposite of the other). Be sure to provide clear signs of your devotion if you want the other to feel secure in the relationship. Hopefully the lightheartedness of Gemini will counteract any tendency to sulk that Venus in Cancer can sometimes bring. Their juxtaposing qualities may cause conflict trying to be heard, when the one needs variety and space to explore while the other requires single-pointed devotion. How you reconcile the two will depend on which quality is stronger in your personal horoscope.

Life tides at home

I woke the other day, all bleary-eyed from having stared at the laptop screen into the wee hours the night before, and decided to take my dog, Marcus Arelius, for his morning walk across the Keurbooms River. Actually it’s a morning swim for him but I get to wade over in my swimmers. However, although he jumped in and paddled off in doggy, I noticed the water level was way higher than was decent for my swimmer-clad limbs at that time of the day, so I promised Marcus Arelius a rain cheque and went back inside. It was then that I got to realize first hand how the cycles of the Moon and its magnetic pull, affects my everyday reality. The Keurbooms River runs into the lagoon, which is now fed directly by the tidal currents at Lookout Restaurant, particularly since the ocean totally wiped out Lookout beach and its parking lot during the Spring tides a few months back.
It’s this that got me thinking how the ancients paid as much attention to the Moon as they did the Sun. Ask any archeoastronomer and he will tell you there are clues hidden in the archaeological findings of pre-history that show that the heavens inspired and shaped the beliefs of the earliest civilizations. But then any woman will tell you how powerful the influence of the Moon is on our psyche. Just listen to her stories of how her menstrual cycle dictates everything from her moods to her appetite and more, like clockwork every lunar cycle. Actually we all have one of our biorhythmic cycles entrained to the lunar cycle of roughly 28 days. Farmers and sailors alike are tuned in to these cycles for their planting and sailing. Can’t imagine trying to do both; conjures up images of a mate watering his portable lettuce patch with desalinated Indian on the deck of his yacht.

Nevertheless it’s hard to deny that we come under the influence of cycles beyond our conscious awareness. In fact early sky gazers noticed patterns, and began associating them with events happening around them. Creation myths often came from observing the sky and seasons, with important rituals timed against an astronomical calendar. Early astronomers from every corner of the globe – India, the Middle East, North Africa, South America and Europe – developed calendars that determined their entire annual schedule.
The interplay of various planetary cycles has been found to have the qualities of a clock: an astoundingly intricate, mysteriously precise clock. Astrology has organized the workings of this clock into symbolic from which we can infer meanings about our time and place in the cosmos.

Riding the bull home

Thurs 29 April – Wed 12 May

Ah, the titillating tastes of the Sun in Taurus may well continue to allure, as we find ourselves enhanced by the acquisition of possessions and can’t help but identify with these outer trappings and the security they bring. However, with Mercury still knee high in the bull manure, too much focus on the maximization of gain and of enjoyment can have the opposite effect. Disruptions or communication breakdown in diplomacy, the arts and the pursuit of money, possessions and pleasure are possible, so pay close attention when those highlights go in at the salon or the work goes up on the gallery walls. Even modern art can get lost in translation. To put it another way, Mercury retro in Taurus brings stubborn blockages connected with new ideas, powers of concentration and putting ideas into a practical format. Access to the most direct route to your goals is likely to be blocked by breakdowns in communication and unwillingness to compromise. Pay close attention to what you say and communicate in general, particularly around the days of Mercury's station on May 11th. If you are itching to argue with someone, especially, or if you are planning on "signing on the dotted line", try to hold off. It is possible that you may have a change of mind once the station passes, so you can avoid some damage in the meantime. People don't say what they mean, or mean what they say! Some people are more sensitive to Mercury retrograde cycles than others. Mercury-ruled Gemini and Virgo are likely to be particularly sensitive to the effects in general. This applies to anyone who has a number of planets in either sign.

Pushy Mars in an equally fixed (read autocratic) sign of Leo is not going to find it easy holding back either now. Confidence is increased, so the urge to make a showy and physical go of it may urgently demand expression. If only the World Cup was already on. Going for goal will come naturally now, especially on a grand stage. Maybe you can find your own trophy to attain, your own holy grail, something you can show the world and thereby inspire them to also take up the challenge to shine like gold. Just be careful not to overdo it or throw your weight around too much, unless of course you’re worth the weight.

Now with Venus also in flirty Gemini, the mood may well be incredibly social and highly inquisitive so use your wit and charm to make new friends and influence people. Being a mutable (read changeable) air sign, Gemini will facilitate the need for variety in your social scene. If ever you needed to know how to juggle your acts, then now is the time.

Mercury retrograde so stop and smell the roses

Thurs 15 April - Wed 28 April

With the Sun still in impulsive Aries until April 20th and our goddess Venus back at home in Taurus until the 25th , you definitely want to count to ten before pulling out that credit card and investing in something you may later regret, even if it has all the latest tweeters and whoofers built in for your listening pleasure. When the mischievous magician Mercury begins his three week retrograde motion on April 18th you may find yourself re-evaluating and even returning the very item you so lavishly invested in just days before. While Mars is continuing through noble Leo, you may even be acting under a mood of heartfelt generosity and spending on your sons or lovers. Nevertheless, the earthy placing of Mercury in Taurus should hopefully add thoughtfulness to the equation, balancing out the Aries tendency to leap before you look.

Of course for those brief few days from the 20th to the 25th when the Sun joins Mercury and Venus in tolerant Taurus, the pace of things will be at its slowest, possibly a good thing as it allows us time to ruminate and reflect with caution on the issues at hand. Thereafter the Sun continues his languid meander through the meadows of the Bull, accompanied by Mr. Mercury, now in retrograde remember, implying a seemingly slower pace than before. However, what Mercury is doing by walking backwards is that he is looking back and reviewing past events with the idea of refining and refurbishing them so as to actually be more efficient in future, even if it seems counter-productive at present. Therefore any delays that may crop up are only there to facilitate future expediency, like a good highway construction crew. Fortunately, when in the sign of Taurus, Mercury is going to ensure that the workmanship is of higher quality than usual. In fact throughout his sojourn through Taurus, craftsmanship, carpentry, building or construction efforts are all greatly favoured and improved, even if the retro fit brings delays with it. Even your entire value system may come up for review as value for money competes with style and prestige in the maintenance and development of your city of nine gates.

Easter and the pagan fertility festival

Thurs 1 April – Wed 14 April

With Mercury and Venus both strolling through earthy and sensual Taurus at present, don’t be surprised if you find yourself unable to resist the indulgent delicacies on offer at the Easter celebrations this year. Venus is in her own sign when in Taurus and thus more than ever able to facilitate enjoyment of the five senses. Even though eggs and bunnies are actually a carry-over from the pre-Christian pagan fertility festival that used to occur at this time of the year, who can resist them when they appear in their chocolate incarnations, with such colourful new wrappings? In this way symbols from our ancient past still permeate our present collective consciousness without being questioned, even though it is quite obvious that they have nothing to do with the current religious ideologies. And God forbid that I should be indulging in pagan imagery when I get home from church on Easter Sunday. Fortunately Venus in Taurus greatly facilitates fertility or anything earthy or related to Nature, whether as Gaia or any other goddess. So this is an ideal time to tune in to the beauty of nature, appreciate more natural products as well as reflect on the need to go green and protect Mother earth from exploitation, while at the same time providing our bodies with the healthiest care. Of course this should be our focus all the time and not just this fortnight, but with Venus so well placed to facilitate this focus, we can use the opportunity to realign ourselves with this theme. Otherwise the urge to indulge the senses, which is also strengthened now, may find us succumbing to the demands of the tongue. Obviously this is also a great time to hear or play fine music, do any interior decorating, landscaping or any other activity that requires an aesthetically refined touch. Creature comforts and beautiful surroundings are the order of the day, and may leave you feeling frustrated if you are roughing it in some concrete jungle somewhere.

With Mercury also in stable Taurus now, the mind will need time to ponder and chew things over, with tastes tending toward the traditional. This is not the time to try to convince someone to change their minds about anything, and even if they like your ideas, they will need plenty of time to form an opinion. Just make sure it is based on sound practical advice or common sense if you want to appeal at all. Hopefully the tendency to be realistic, to the point of conservative, will prevent any lavish spending urges when the senses are attracted by some glittering must-have luxury item. It all depends on your individual value systems, which may also come up for questioning under this influence.

The fire of Aries

Thurs 18 March – Wed 31 March
As with last edition, Venus continues through Aries, but this time she is joined there by Mercury and on 21 March the Sun. That means, with Mars still in Leo, that it’s “Fire all the way” when considering the influence of our closest movers and shakers in the solar system. If Venus in Aries was forward last edition, then this time should be even more so. The favourable fire correspondence between the personal planets will allow them to all be talking the same language on the same page and in the same direction, so to speak. This will be an ego-boosting time. Some of the most highly favoured activities include those involving men, or products and services related to men, the military, sports, surgical procedures, manufacturing (particularly iron and steel) and firearms. The mood is dynamic and will give a big boost to courageous activities and a push to get ahead, being highly competitive. Now is the time to let it shine. Strut your stuff on the catwalk of life and be prepared for the audience to love and shower you with much-deserved praise in your specific field. Being consciously competitive can be a creative rush and a sure way of expressing your unique talents and individuality. So be yourself with pride and enjoy your rise to the top. This applies even more to those of you with Sun, Moon or Ascendant in Aries in your birth chart, but all of us have Aries in one or the other of the houses in our personal horoscopes.

As you can imagine, this is a delicate time too, for with so much planetary influence pushing in one direction, there is the potential for going overboard if not careful. The mood is to be assertive, go-getting and crusading your cause, but not everyone wants to march to your drum do they? So the tendency may be to come across as opinionated and even end up getting overheated, leading to arguments and worse. Sportsmanship might help here. Certainly having something that you can call your own and work independently on may be good, since going it alone and taking the credit is the mode of nature that presently predominates. The mind will be impulsive, quick-thinking and potentially irritable if it doesn’t get its way or has to wait, so be extra careful of road rage - or any kind of rage for that matter. Our state president Jacob Zuma is an Aries so it will be interesting to see how he behaves over the coming fortnight and if he continues singing his favourite song, “Bring me my machine gun”. A good meditation over the Equinox of the 21st may be on maintaining a balanced and equipoised state of being during this time of equal day and night, for it could be a potentially emotional time in the fiery sense and not all of us are as cool-headed as others under fire.

Return of the Red Planet

Thurs 4 March – Wed 17 March
Our goddess Venus continues to wear her nurse’s outfit as she accompanies the Sun through compassionate Pisces, but only until the 8th, when the Amazon in her emerges as she steps into fiery Aries. Here we have the childlike urge to directly pursue the objects of the senses, and get others to join in the misbehaving at the same time. “I want it and I want it now” you may hear her whispering in your ear. Whoever said a child is pure and innocent obviously hasn’t had one. The same primal urges and desires that you have are present in them, except without the fully developed frontal lobes to cultivate discernment or self-discipline, so it’s “me first, all mine” and other such survival instincts all demanding attention simultaneously. Of course the hunger that Venus in Aries stimulates can be a very healthy impetus to achieving the goal. Let’s just hope the goal is the appropriate one. What to speak of Patience, even Determination may go flying out the window though, for although the impulse toward immediate gratification may be stimulated, the staying power to see the journey through to achievement of the objective is just as easily distracted by some other object that enters the line of sight. If you are the type of person who is already finding the current Sun in Pisces to be watering down your resolve, undermining your logic and reviving your escapist tendencies, as the lower manifestation of the sign is able to do, then this added Venus influence may just be something to watch out for. However, if you are sensitized to the messages of your body, discriminating in the acceptance of your mind’s demands and not fooled by your ego, Venus in Aries should be able to add a playful, sparkling and warm-hearted edge to your personality this fortnight – great if you’re by nature the shy and retiring type, but may make you a bit blunt and inconsiderate if you are already a fiery or extroverted individual.

Add to this the fact that Mars is finally ending his retro phase and moving forward again from the 10th in Leo – also a fire sign – and you have a potent mix of passion, high spirits and enthusiasm to contend with folks. As to how you personally channel it is entirely up to you. Fortunately, to assist you along the path, Mercury makes a cameo appearance in Pisces for this fortnight only, joining the Sun and Jupiter there to inspire your dreams and visions. Just be careful that your fantasies don’t lead you to chasing pipe dreams, or becoming too easily seduced. The tendency to be bewildered by irrational fears or suspicions or to be easily swayed and gullible may arise in those with weaker minds now. However, those practiced in the art of meditation or contemplation may find they are more easily able to tap into the collective unconscious or akashic records and access the ancient wisdom there.

Saturn contd.

Thurs 18 Feb – Wed 3 March

Old father Time or Chronos as Saturn is known (from where the words chronology and chronometer originate) moves so slowly that he remains in Libra for about two years, and thus seldom gets much of a mention. But while he is in Libra, the balancing of love, legalities or politics can become an increasingly complicated yet necessary task. Personal partnerships and contracts can overshadow your private plans, throwing you off balance. Relationships will either become fully engaging, or overwhelming, especially if you have a fear about making a commitment or being more socially involved. Besides that you can expect more concern with laws that govern and regulate society so that it is just and fair. Problems start when people take it on themselves to decide and judge who is more worthy than others to receive support and benefit.

But then that is a background influence, while on a more immediate and current level the Sun joins Venus and Jupiter in watery Pisces this edition, greatly facilitating the ability to become more sensitive to the emotional environment and develop the intuitive faculties. Now is the best time to go within and explore your dreams or visions for your future as well as nostalgically reminiscing about your past. The artist within you may well be inspired to pick up the pen, brush, camera or guitar and capture in picture, poem or song the wondrous workings of the world, the heart or – for those of you whose ears are even more sensitized – the soul. Don’t worry if you missed the boat on Valentine’s day for now is still the time to win the easily melted heart of your potential loved one with the seductive arts of sweet words and sweet chocolates. The boundaries and defenses may be a bit weaker at this time so dust off your violin and don’t be shy to serenade your sweetheart into a serene and sublime state of surrender. And if that’s not your scene then there is always the solitary introspective contemplation of the divine within you, who may have some cosmic revelations to reveal while you sit enraptured by the beauty of the world around us. After all, with three of the most positive planetary influences in Pisces at present, the opportunity is there to be moved from within or without. Just don’t forget to feed the cat.

Saturn

Thurs 4 Feb – Wed 17 Feb
Although serious Saturn has also been moving in a retrograde motion through Libra since mid January already, he is such a slow mover that we only get to discuss him now. Also, this sobering retro influence will be with us all the way up to the end of May, so there is no rushing this venerable old grandfather of the solar system.

Saturn governs the physical and psychological supports and structures in our life. He governs the rules and regulations by which we guide our lives, as well as our sense of responsibility and our limitations. He allows us to define our boundaries for ourselves by saying “No”. When Saturn is retrograde, it is a good time to go back and assess or solidify commitments made, projects started and responsibilities undertaken in the past. It gives us the opportunity to go back and reorganize or renegotiate any activities or commitments that seem to be the source of frustration. Weed out the source of frustration during these coming months, particularly – since Saturn is in Libra – in your relationships, whether business or personal, whether the frustration is due to too much or too little happening in the relationship department. Know how much you can do before you start to feel frustrated, trapped or confined, and draw the line before you reach that point. It is highly recommended that you do not start any new business ventures while Saturn is retrograde, for you may find a lot of reorganizing has to be done before any success can be achieved. I realize this is a long time to put off your new business – until the end of May – but going back to old or ongoing business is preferred for this time.

With much more mobile Mercury joining Sun in Aquarius on the 10th of February, the pace of thoughts and ideas will speed up, with original, inventive and even unorthodox insights coming to the fore. So feel free to think outside the box, take the opportunity to become scientific, objective and well-informed. Team work is highly favoured as well as seeing the bigger social picture. After all, we are all merely small parts and parcels of the one whole community, all with identical rights, even though our tastes may differ slightly. If you find yourself feeling somewhat scatterbrained on occasion, just say you are having an “intuitive moment”. The corpus callosum that bridges the two hemispheres of our brain is not as developed in some of us as it is in others and if we can’t synchronize both to speak in unison, creating that “aha” moment of grounded conscious insight, then we can at least allow one hemisphere to speak at a time.

Hopefully Venus in Pisces from the 11th will add a healthy dose of empathy and a mood of voluntary self-sacrifice for the service of those in need, especially if the Aquarian influence becomes too coolly objective and calculating. Venus in Pisces should also stimulate musical or poetic inspiration, and if not personal romance, then perhaps a more altruistic love for humanity and a vision of that spark of divinity present in all life forms.
Thurs 21 Jan – Wed 3 Feb 2010
Well the good news is that Mercury has completed his retrograde phase and is now moving forward again through Capricorn, thus putting away his trickster mask and picking up from where he left off as dutiful minister of communications and noteworthy neural networking. Thus the thought processes, as well as the appliances or tools of your trade, should be a bit more grounded, practical, reliable and steady.

The not so good news, however, is that Mars, the minister of defense, is still moving retrograde through proud Leo, and as alluded to last time, now more than usual, anxiety could develop around image and libidinal expression, with aggression being the first symptom of a block in that area. Mars is usually fearless, independent, generous and honest, like a noble warrior, but the opposite may be the mood during this retro phase, especially should issues from the past, where grand statements were made, come forward to demand a reckoning. People in positions of authority, trust or responsibility may need to watch their backs lest Anthony return to meet Caesar. Even while working or playing hard, we need to beware the expression of a fiery or violent temper, especially those of us with heart conditions. A friend may quite innocently want to demonstrate to you his latest kung fu moves but end up accidentally poking you in the eye. Liability to fever, inflammations, sunstroke or back pain also increases (Leo is a fire sign that governs the heart and back). Any danger of accident or violence will probably be the outcome of carelessness, unchecked aggression or just plain foolishness, so stay cool.

To help you keep a cool head, the Sun will be gliding through the social, intellectual and sometimes progressive air sign of Aquarius for the next month, joined there by lovely Venus, so now is the time to spread your networking net and catch up with long lost friends as well as make many new ones. Anything more romantic than the swapping of interesting websites, theories on the origins of the pyramids, or eco-friendly dishwashing detergents may have to wait until later though.

This week also marks the move of jovial Jupiter into the potentially compassionate and sensitive water sign of Pisces. As a result there will be an underlying background influence over the next several months – for those who are thus inclined – of spiritual or religious receptivity, charity and a rediscovering of that once cherished but perhaps now eroded overall belief in the inherent beauty and goodness of the universe. The greatest tragedy is the waste, indolence and frustration that can result in not maintaining this belief. After all, the universe will manifest to you according to your personal perception thereof. Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder for the eye is the window of the soul.
